This year, ERCIM has exceptionally selected two winners for the Cor Baayen Award: Stratos Idreos, researcher in the Database Architectures group of CWI and Luca Mottola, researcher in the Networked Embedded Systems Group at SICS.

The University of Cyprus (UCY) is delighted to join ERCIM as its 19th member. UCY is represented in ERCIM by both the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering through the Department of Computer Science and the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering respectively. Dedicated to producing and promoting high-end research, UCY strives to establish a position at the forefront of European research. In that respect, participation in ERCIM is expected to further enhance the strong links that UCY has with other European academic and research institutions.
With the first general assembly of the ERCIM1 association (AISBL2) in Trondheim, Norway, 10 June 2011, ERCIM has accomplished a major organisational restructuring. An important change in ERCIM’s membership policy is coinciding with the creation of ERCIM AISBL. ERCIM is now open to multiple members per country while retaining its membership criteria of excellence and active participation. The aim is to build a strong European community of research organisations to promote science, research and innovation.

CoreGRID is a European research Network of Excellence which has developed theoretical foundations and software infrastructures for large-scale, distributed Grid and P2P applications. The network has extended its interests to include the emerging field of (service based) Cloud computing which is of great importance to the European software industry.
For over twenty years, ERCIM has been a consortium of leading research institutions committed to cooperating for excellence in research. Focusing on information and communication science and technology (ICST) and related areas of mathematics, ERCIM has a successful track record of promoting ICST research and cooperation in Europe and beyond. ERCIM is now dropping its limitation of one member per country, allowing a small number of excellent research institutions in ICST per country to directly become members of ERCIM.
Michel Cosnard, President of INRIA was elected President of ERCIM at the last ERCIM Board of Directors, held in Brno, Czech Republic, 4 November 2010. Michel Cosnard took office as ERCIM president 1st January 2011 for a two-year term. Michel succeeds Keith Jeffery who served as ERCIM President from January 2005.
