A German-Chinese research institute for Information and Communication Technology will be founded in order to intensify the bilateral co-operation in this field. This was decided at the occasion of the visit of the Chinese Minister for Science and Technology, Mr. Xu Guanhua in Germany, in June 2002. Two joint labs are expected to be created in Berlin and Beijing. In Berlin the lab will concentrate on mobile communication, in Beijing the focus will be on software technology, in particular on middleware and embedded systems. On the German side Fraunhofer is in charge of this activity, on the Chinese side it is the High Technology Research and Development Center of the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST HTRDC).
