1st International Conference on Universal Access in Human-Computer Interactionby Constantine Stephanidis The 1st International Conference on Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction (UAHCI 2001) took place in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, 5-10 August 2001, jointly with the Ninth International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI International 2001), the Symposium on Human Interface (Japan) 2001, and the 4th International Conference on Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics. The establishment of this new international conference is largely due to the dedicated work of the ERCIM Working Group User Interfaces for All, which, since its institution in 1995, has carried out a variety of activities bringing together researchers and teams who share common interests and aspirations, and contribute to the endeavours towards making the emerging Information Society equally accessible to all citizens. The UAHCI 2001 conference has attracted strong international interest, with 228 papers presented, covering a wide range of topics in the area of Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction, such as Universal Design, Adaptive and Intelligent Interfaces, Architectures and Tools, Multimodal, Continuous and Ubiquitous Interaction, User Diversity and User Participation, Human Factors, Ergonomics, Guidelines and Standards, Access to Information, Applications, Assistive Technologies, and Cultural, Social, Ethical and Legal Issues. The Proceedings of UAHCI 2001 have been published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates (ISBN 0-8058-3609-8). The Second International Conference on Universal Access in Human-Computer Interaction will be held in Crete, Greece, 22-27 June 2003, jointly with the Tenth International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI International 2003, http://hcii2003.ics.forth.gr), the Symposium on Human Interface (Japan) 2003, and the 5th International Conference on Engineering Psychology and Cognitive Ergonomics.
