Strengthening Cooperation with Polish Research

CRIT2, Co-operative Research in Information Technology, is a follow up of a very successful project on Co-operative Research in Information Technology (CRIT), co-ordinated by GMD, carried out in Poland during 1993-95. The aim of the CRIT was to stimulate contacts and co-operation between Polish and European research in Computer Science. Six sub-projects, selected among a large number of competing proposals based on nationally funded Polish research projects, received funding from the Pre-Copernicus actions to facilitate co-operation and communication with EU researchers.

Like CRIT1, CRIT2 aims to strengthen co-operation between the Polish and EU research communities. In addition, it puts more emphasis on industrial relevance of the forthcoming results and industrial co-operation. The CRIT2 consortium consists of two Polish and two EU partners. On the EU side: GMD - Forschungszentrum Informationstechnik GmbH (co-ordinator) and Swedish Institute of Computer Science, SICS. On the Polish side the partners are: Foundation for Polish Science, FPS (technical co-ordinator) and Polish Information Processing Society, PIPS.

The first phase of CRIT2 (approx. 6 months) will start mid-October. This phase includes formulation and issuing of a Call for Proposals, evaluation of the incoming proposals and selection of between 10 to 15 sub-project proposals that best fulfil the Call's evaluation criteria. In the second phase winning sub-projects will be carried out.
During the first phase the project, the project consortium will receive advice and guidance from a Panel consisting of distinguished Polish and EU experts (5 from each side). Among them there is one representative for the European Commission and one representative for the Polish State Committee for Scientific Research (KBN), the most significant research funding agency in Poland. The Panel will also assist the consortium in the continuous monitoring and evaluation of the sub-projects during the second phase of CRIT2.

CRIT2 is funded jointly by the Commission's INCO/Copernicus and the IT-programme (EU partners).
