Developing Document Handling Technologies
by Bernard Hidoine
INRIA and Rank Xerox SA announced a partnership to further advance
electronic document processing technology. One of the objectives is to apply
Rank Xerox technologies and INRIA research results to develop innovative
applications such as digital library services.
Over the next three years, the Rank Xerox Research Centre and INRIA will
address a number of key areas including:
- document creation using authoring tools, translation tools, document
assembling tools; automatic creation of terminology dictionaries
- document storage and access for easy information retrieval; document
storage should be efficient using compression tools, indexing tools, access
to the information in the document using intelligent search and retrieval
tools (multi-lingual search allows users to search with key-words in their
native language, even if the documents to be searched are written in several
languages)
- Document visualization using high resolution document browsers and
high resolution visualizers
- content manipulation: automatic summarization and translation tools
- copyright management, security and authentication tools for the distri-bution
of documents on the network
- process support technology for the coordination of distributed event.
"The aim of this co-operation is to bring users the most up-to-date
document handling technologies," said Hervé Gallaire, Director
of the Rank Xerox Research Centre in Grenoble. "We anticipate a fruitful
three years ahead of us resulting in the development of exciting and innovative
technologies and applications," added H. Gallaire. "The partnership
demonstrates our commit-ment to establish close links with the industry,
thus favouring technology transfer and exchanging expertise. INRIA and RXRC
are planning other joint projects and met in September to discuss and establish
a time line for these," said Bernard Larrouturou, President of INRIA.
