ERCIM News No.25 - April 1996 - GMD
GMD helps to put German museum on the Web
by Eva Emskötter
A new World Wide Web service is provided in cooperation with the "Hessisches
Landesmuseum Darmstadt" by the two GMD Institutes in Darmstadt.
The Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt is one of the oldest public museums
in Germany, with departments of Art (paintings, drawings, sculptures), Arts
and Crafts (especially medieval ivory work and art nouveau), and Natural
History (geology-palaeontology, mineralogy and zoology). It comprises visual
arts from the Greek-Roman period to the present time, and exhibits one of
the most important collections of fossils found in "Grube Messel",
the first site in Germany included in the Unesco World Natural Heritage
list. The museum also contains Joseph Beuys Complex.
The web site offer a virtual guided tour, facts about the museum's history,
its staff and the services offered to the visitors, a lot of detailed information
and pictures about the collections, and many links to other art-related
World Wide Web pages. The application demonstrates examples of navigation
in a guided tour and browsing, the layout follows the structure of a classic
printed guide. Currently, the texts are only available in German. The address
is http://www.darmstadt.gmd.de/Museum/HLMD
