KNOSSOS Technologies, S.A., a spin-off company from the Institute of Computer Science (ICS) of FORTH, is a dynamic high-technology company founded in 1989 and based at Heraklion Crete. KNOSSOS Technologies currently employs ten full-time and part-time employees, as well as a number of highly qualified consultants. All company employees hold advanced graduate degrees in computer science or engineering and have extensive academic and industrial R&D experience. The current annual turnover of the company is in excess of 300 KECU. The company is active in the following areas :
Scientific consultancy services in the areas of Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS), Telemedicine Systems, Hospital Information Systems, Rehabilitation Tele-Informatics, Man-machine Interfaces, Networking, Information Systems for Office Automation, Computer Vision Systems and Image Processing, Robotics:
Throughout its existence, KNOSSOS has kept close ties with ICS-FORTH in various ways. The company has been a partner together with ICS in the AIM II project (EURIPACS). The result of this collaboration is the development of a prototypical information system which provides an object oriented framework for the indexing and retrieval of medical images by pictorial content.
Another aspect of the cooperation between ICS and KNOSSOS, has been the agreement between the two to market a system for the acquisition, management and communication of multi-modality medical images, developed by the institute. Finally, following the advice of ICS-FORTH, KNOSSOS has developed and markets a number of products in the medical informatics area, such as a PC-based Telemedicine System (ICAM-MS100), a system for the archiving of medical documents (HDIS), an automatic roster making tool (EPHEMERIA) and a system for archiving the diagnoses of radiology departments of clinics and hospitals (RADIO-ARCHIVIST).
Consistent with its founding charter, KNOSSOS Technologies has been and continues to be an active participant in a number of EU and National competitive research programmes, such as the AEU-205 EUROLASER (EUREKA), SILK (ESPRIT II), GAMES II (AIM II), PMMA (ESPRIT III), MIP-PS IASON, CHIC (ESPRIT III), IBIDEM (TIDE).
