ERCIM News No.24 - January 1996

GMD - Andreas Graff from GMD's Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing has been awarded the European Sup'Prize (ECCO contest) for the best student contribution in Madrid. The basis for the award was Graff's thesis at the "Fachhochschule Köln" which he wrote while working in a GMD project. Graff studied the behaviour of a German Weather Service computer program on parallel systems. GMD is developing innovative parallel computing methods in cooperation with the German Weather Service. Highly efficient parallel computer programs are to enable in future more exact and detailed weather forecasting by using local high resolution weather models. Graff's successful contribution has been produced under the custody of Dr. Wolfgang Joppich from GMD and Prof. Wolfgang Borutzky from Fachhochschule Koeln. It is an example of the fruitful cooperation between GMD and Fachhochschule Koeln. Putting just recently developed methods and techniques quickly into practice is a most significant aspect of this work. GMD's Institute for Algorithms and Scientific Computing which is managed by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Trottenberg has been awarded six international prizes on parallel computing during the last three years.
