From 2-5 November 1994 the Asociación Española.de Informática y Matemática Aplicada (AEDIMA) organized the meetings of the ERCIM Networks on Graphics, Databases and Parallel Processing at the Polytechnical University of Catalonia (UPC) in Barcelona.
In conjunction with the meetings, a familiarization event was also organized. Jaume Pages, President of AEDIMA, gave an overview of the association describing its member institutes and their role in IT and Mathematics research in Spain. Different AEDIMA research groups then presented their activities. The attendees also heard a presentation of the European Commission's research policy given by Dr Ronald Mackay which was followed by lively discussion which concentrated on the role ERCIM could and should play in this. Prof. Orphanoudakis, Director of ICS-FORTH and vice President of ERCIM gave an outline of the future strategy for ERCIM. An official ceremony was then held in which, Dr. Péter Inzelt, Director of the Hungarian Computer and Automation Research Institute SZTAKI, formally signed the agreement making his organization a member of ERCIM.
Finally, Prof. Alain Bensoussan, Director of INRIA thanked Prof. Cor Baayen, former President and one of the founders of ERCIM, for his three years of chairmanship and his many efforts on behalf of the Consortium over the last years. In his answering speech, Professor Baayen indicated his firm conviction in the future success of ERCIM. He has accepted to become ERCIM's President of Honour.
